I mean, I vividly remember my little sister getting some that came with a doll of hers when she was 5! I also remember seeing the stuff on offer in many a new age store on the shelf next to the incense in intricately carved soapstone compacts, lol. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI assure you dear reader, my answer wasn't meant to be hurtful or mean spirited, and I admit I was simply wrong and uneducated in the ways of this magical stuff!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo what changed my mind you ask? Quite simply, it was the history. It turns out I actually owned a book on solid perfumes! I know, how is this possible? But it does happen. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhenever I delve into anything I go full tilt and many years back, when I began working on honing my skills as a perfumer, I ordered every book out there! Some books were even in French! And one, as I mentioned, was on Solid Perfumes... totally didn't read the subtitle when ordering it, all I read was \"Perfume\". When it arrived, uninterested, I tossed it to the side, only to stumble upon it once more, years later, while transferring books to a new shelf.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnd after the many requests from people over the years I did become more curious as to what all the hoopla was about in regards to the balm. So I put the tome on my bed and promised to take a quick gander at it before I fell asleep that night. That gander turned into a marathon session, a real page turner!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI am embarrassed to say I was way wrong, my previous exposure to the stuff was very limited, and I really had no right making up my mind to write it off so quickly. Solid Perfumes \u0026amp; Colognes were born out of a rich history and are totally different animals when it comes to scent carriers. I was looking at them completely wrong.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFact is, a Solid Cologne is a much more personal, intimate, and tactile creation when compared to say, an Eau De Parfum, Cologne, or Aftershave. It is not meant for everyone in the room to smell but rather those closest to you, as well as yourself. It isn't meant to live on the shelf in your bathroom, but more as a travel companion tucked in your backpack, briefcase, gym bag or carry on!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eThis is part of the history!\u003c\/em\u003e Back in the day, solid perfumes were kept close, often on the body, hidden in the secret compartment of a ring, or worn close to the heart in a locket or metal ball called a Pomander. It was always there for a quick whiff or application to the hot spots or facial hair. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMany men and women even carried scent boxes with them back in the day for inhaling while walking the fowl streets of medieval cities! Some of these boxes and compacts held multiple scents to be enjoyed one at a time or all at once or in different combinations. The sniffer could turn on or off the different scents of the accord...\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eThat's just AWESOME! \u003c\/em\u003eLike playing your own composition on a musical instrument. Scent for scents sake!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEven plague doctors got in on the act and kept solid perfume on themselves as well. Many now know that doctors of that time wore curious bird like masks, the beak of which was stuffed with aromatic herbs. These herbs were thought to prevent the spread of the plague, and they were also used to eclipse the stench coming off the patients. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhat you may not know is these doctors also came outfitted with a cane that hid a secret flip lid in the handle. This compartment held a blended, solid perfume that could be accessed in a pinch and smeared under the nose. \u003cem\u003eBrilliant!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn Ancient Egypt, solid perfumes were a large part of the culture. An Egyptian  woman often wore what was called an unguent, or scent cone, containing the perfume, on the top of her head. Unlike modern solid perfumes, which are mixed with wax and oils, these ancient fragrances were blended with animal fat, and during the course of the hot day it would melt and anoint the wearer...\u003cem\u003ethat's pretty epic!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI could go on, but instead, I encourage you to do your own research. I promise you it is fascinating and will give you a greater appreciation of Solid Cologne and Perfumes!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo, with the weight of history dancing in my head I went to work on creating my own Solid Cologne, and it came out wonderful! Rather than dissolving absolutes, resins, and balsams into alcohol as I typically would for an alcohol based perfume, I carefully heated them, and along with the scent oils, blended them into the Beeswax, Shea Oil, Jojoba oil, Prickly Pear Oil matrix.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI find that, as the perfumer, the scent stays truer longer to the original shape I was going for. Meaning, \u003cstrong\u003evolatile top notes last longer\u003c\/strong\u003e and heart notes fade slower too! Base notes will last much, much longer as they mix and mingle more organically with your own body chemistry and natural oils seamlessly. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSolid Cologne is a total and complete departure from the chemical reaction one experiences with an alcohol based product. It is more like a harmonious alchemical marriage, than a quick burn and evaporate dry down effect. Very different energetics when compared, and don't misunderstand me, they are both wonderful, but again, unique from each other, and that's what I didn't understand before.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEven the mechanics of application are different. Apply it once or revisit it many times during the day as a pick me up, no one will even notice when you do. There's a very sensual element at play here, like a secret with yourself.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI really have to say, this whole process enriched me as a perfumer, I truly felt part of a greater work. He met us up there to give us the key. Before he took off however, he had my brother and I help him bring some logs inside and stack the rest on the porch. Working next to him is when I \"caught it\",\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eAramis\u003c\/em\u003e. It's unmistakable, infectious, mysterious and Iconic. I truly believe everyone remembers exactly where they where when they smelled this mystery for the first time!  The whole experience burned the fragrance forever on to my brain. This was before I knew that Avon had built an aftershave empire out of Duping other popular scents of the time! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eSure enough, Clint is almost a dead-ringer for Aramis! Now that my scent palate has matured and become more colorful and dare I say more sophisticated, I recognize just subtle differences in the two. Clint possess just a hint more leather but at the end of the day is much closer than even the modern version of Aramis! [So if you ever find a bottle of Clint in an antique shop,\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eGRAB IT!\u003c\/em\u003e]\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eNot sure when, my guess is early 2000's, they changed the formula. The new stuff just doesn't smell the same nor compare. There can be a number of reasons for this, and this seems to be \"business as usual\" for a lot of \"classic frags\"... It seems to scan the invasive green landscape, spinning slowly in a circle, taking it all in. If it could, it would give an impressed whistle. Then in a flash of white light it disappears just as suddenly as it previously arrived. No, it wasn't that pesky, meddling CUBE he was picking up on, though its charcoal like ozone musk was undoubtedly fresh and still hanging on the breeze like a lightening strike. No this other distinctive scent was both more menacing and more intriguing. Green, slightly spicy, feisty, unruly, and teeming with life. It danced in front of the mesmerized malamute like a dangling mystical carrot of taboo, like a phantom or trickster spirit, reminiscent of the coyotes he had bumped into accidentally in the Arizona desert after dark. But now Huxley's reverie was broken and he just stared at the strange looking human before him. \"This better be good...\" he thought, \"or at least call for a lunch break.\" His stomach grumbled as if to punctuate that last point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAldous stood naked as a jaybird before them except for a turban, and in that same instance Ludmilla suddenly materialized. Aldous made a high pitched shriek and disappeared in a white flash.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"Damn it, he's gone again!\" Doug blurted out while making an exaggerated show of feeling the air wildly with his hands where Aldous just was.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"He really needs to stop doing that.\" he added. \"I think he likes you Ludmilla,\" Fran added. Ludmilla just stood there looking confused and doubtful, still wearing her cloak.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSuddenly, Aldous reappeared in a smart plaid sports jacket, jeans, a t-shirt, and a cap in place of the turban. \"Sorry, still getting used to this Time Hopping thing.\" Doug just pointed his finger at Aldous, and said in the same tone he would to Hux, \"Stay.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey all now looked around slowly. Where were they? Judging by the strange make of the grounded crafts and vehicles in the what one could imagine were at one time streets, they were at some point in the future...but when? \"Why would the CUBE lead us here?\" asked Douglas and continued, \"Mega Flora \u0026amp; Fauna for all the eye can see.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"I'm not sure.\" answered Fran in a distracted tone as she knelt down poking at the gelatinous substance glistening on the twisting vines that covered the road. The last thing Doug remembered was being lifted up by his hood and thrown into the back of a wagon outside the great carnival tent they had been rolling around in right before all hell broke loose. Had they all collectively time hopped together? Every so often he would stop in mid sentence to delight in the smell a giant species of flower, and then he'd pick right back up in his diatribe on this and that. Douglas completely tuned him out and kept his eyes on the CUBE.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDoug first crossed paths with CUBE one strange day 5 years back on a trip to Blythe, California. He was there to check out some unique geoglyphs located there. He had reason to believe these ancient \"messages to the gods\" were actually part of a greater world treasure map of some sort, not intended for gods or aliens, but to the future generations that they knew would eventually take to the air...as they had, in their prime. It was Doug's suspicion that the builders of these vast glyphs were done by the diaspora of a once great, and by that time, fractured advanced civilization.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSadly, a lot of this true \"world map\" was destroyed by progress, and simply by honest folks over time that had no idea what they were looking at, if they could even distinguish what it was at all. Thanks to modern LIDAR technology, which is used to survey vast expanses of land from the air, it was possible to see even more of what was on this theoretical map. Douglas was doing just that with a drone Fran had cleverly modified. He commanded the drone from his phone as it flew at a hight of 400 feet. The task was monotonous, similar to mowing the lawn in the sky. For that very reason Fran had decided to stay back at the lab in Arizona, doing more clever Fran things. The scan was for the most part automated. It relied on a digital grid system generated by the program utilizing a standard GPS guidance system. Meaning, he didn't have to look up all day operating a joy stick. But that didn't mean he wasn't looking up, in fact, Doug's eyes were most of the time on the sky...and that, my friend, is how he came to spot CUBE.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"What is that?\" Doug thought out loud, startling Huxley who snoozed in a slender section of shade offered by a nearby Organ Pipe Cactus. It really just appeared out of nowhere. Was it another drone? He scanned the landscape looking for a pilot but there was no one around and he was so far away from anyone or anything. Blythe was one of those towns where folks typically only stopped for gas or if they broke down. Was it a balloon? Maybe A Box Kite? At a height of 400 feet, with the afternoon sun directly behind the object, it was tough to say. But it was moving as if guided by something, and was coming uncomfortably close to the drone as it plotted along merrily on its invisible grid. It seemed to be checking it out. Doug dug through his backpack looking for his monocular. Huxley, now interested, bounded over to help. Well, that is if \"helping\" meant poking around for Cliff Bars, which is how he interpreted Doug's actions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePeering through the spyglass Doug searched the sky until he came upon the object. The hair on the back of his neck stood up and an eery feeling reeled down his spine as he saw the CUBE honing in and picking up speed as it closed the distance between them. It was at this point that Huxley took notice of the incoming black box, or more like \"Lunch Box\", at least in Huxley's mind. As Doug sprinted towards the Jeep Huxley fixed his stare on the rapidly approaching toy. Then with the CUBE only a few short feet away, and ready to dive bomb the Jeep as Doug dove into the hatch, Huxley leaped into the air, jaws open and ready. The giant malamute landed, rolling through the dry sand wrestling his prize into submission. Huxley quickly realized the object definitely was not lunch, nor was it edible. The CUBE, much to his surprise tasted like old people feet, an acquired taste for sure. He quickly spit it out with much gusto.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDoug hopped out of the back of the Jeep and walked over to the CUBE, now motionless on the ground. He gently kicked at it with caution and trepidation, as one does with an unexploded firecracker. There was no movement. There were obvious bite marks on parts of it but in a matter of seconds they were gone! The CUBE then slowly rose to eye level and began to give the human who had caused him so much trouble a once over. It then lowered itself down to Huxley level and repeated the scan. Then, once more it rose up to look head long into Doug's eyes creating some sort of strange, invisible link between the two. And in an instant Doug was in the CUBES head.
