That was my very first aftershave at age 15, and it left a permanent imprint on my soul. It was simply what men wore. You smelled it on fathers, grandfathers, teachers, barbers, scout leaders, coaches and even drum teachers. It lived in heavy glass bottles on porcelain sinks, and one splash carried real authority. It shaped how an entire generation understood grooming and growing up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003eShulton introduced Old Spice for men in 1938, and the timing could not have been more significant. As World War II unfolded, Old Spice became closely tied to American servicemen. It traveled overseas in duffel bags and footlockers, splashed on before leave, before dates, before dances, and before shipping out again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003eWhen the war ended, millions of men returned home carrying the scent with them. Old Spice didn’t just survive the war years, but in my humble opinion, it was forged in them. (and you get get that in the first whiff.)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003eThat post war era cemented Old Spice as an American institution. Through the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and well into the 70s, the formula remained remarkably consistent; Rich spice, floral backbone, warm ambered depth and, refined iconic epicness. It was bold without being harsh and comforting without being soft. Spend any time in the shave groups and you’ll see folks all saying the same thing. The vintage Shulton stuff simply had more presence. (Seriously, I don't think anyone has ever requested a dupe of modern Old Spice.)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cb\u003eFun fact:\u003c\/b\u003e Old Spice actually began as a women’s fragrance! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003eIn 1937, Shulton released Early American Old Spice as a perfume for women. Bright, agreeable, almost reassuring. The sort of opening that says, “Nothing to worry about here.” This is, of course, a lie. Because no sooner has that citrus flicker made its polite exit than the woods step in and take over the conversation entirely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003eCedarwood arrives first, dry and confident, followed closely by oakmoss, which brings with it the unmistakable feeling that the ground beneath your feet has been there far longer than you have. Patchouli settles in like an old story that refuses to be forgotten, while spice moves through the composition in a way that suggests something is happening just out of sight, and possibly just out of reach. And then there is the musk. Not loud. Not unruly. Just…there. Observing. Waiting its turn. Others insist it is the unmistakable sound of a bow drawn across strings that were never, under any reasonable circumstances, meant for human hands.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003eAnd at the center of these stories is the Green Man.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003eHe is said to play. Not often. Not for long. But when he does, things happen. Creatures stir. Shapes shift. Even the most stubborn skeptics begin to feel that perhaps remaining seated by the fire is an excellent idea after all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003eOne camper, naturally, did not agree.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003eA boy named Harper once decided that curiosity was a far more sensible guide than caution. He slipped out into the night, following the sound into the snow. His footprints were clear. Direct. Determined. They led into a frozen clearing where, quite abruptly, they stopped. No sign of a struggle. No sign of a return. Just a single sprig of holly pressed into the soft snow, as if placed there with great care by something that did not feel the need to explain itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003eThis fragrance captures that exact moment. It was originally made for an old friend of mine who happens to be a genuinely excellent professional fiddle player. He had a fondness for my fragrances and, quite sensibly, decided that selling bottles of his own signature splash was far more interesting than the usual assortment of concert merchandise like t-shirts, CDs, or hats, all of which have the distinct disadvantage of not smelling like anything in particular. #TrySomethingDifferent\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003eI made one batch. It sold out. I made a second. At no point did I think, “Yes, this will one day become a sought after artifact in the world of wet shaving.” In fact, I gave it very little thought at all, which, as it turns out, was a mistake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p1\"\u003eBecause thanks to the peculiar economics of the internet, one of these bottles eventually found its way onto eBay, where it proceeded to sell for roughly 150 smackers. The mystery deepened. And so, in a way that can only be described as inevitable in hindsight, Fiddler’s Friend quietly became the sort of thing people wanted precisely because they could not have it.
